Dharma Voices for Animals (DVA) is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization committed both to practicing the teachings of the Buddha (the Dharma) and to speaking out when the actions of those in Dharma communities and the policies of Dharma centers lead to animal suffering. We want to be the voice of the animals who cannot speak our language. We speak out about the harm we cause other sentient beings when we eat them, use their body parts as clothing, or use products that are tested on them. While DVA recognizes the challenges of living in a complex, modern society, we wish to promote the choices that provide the greatest reduction of animal suffering.
We will achieve revolutionary social and political change for animals in one generation
We reject the speciesism that enables the mass torture and killing of nonhuman animals and the blatant disregard for their home - our planet - as well as the unjust and oppressive institutions and ideologies that harm all animals including humans.
Using our roadmap as a guide, we will work to enshrine an Animal Bill of Rights.
Our founder has a Risk Management background, bringing a unique perspective to the issue of hunger. In Risk Management, companies and organizations reduce negative financial impacts by identifying, analyzing and mitigating dangers that arise through normal operations. She has also experienced food insecurity and isolation firsthand. From this lens, Grandma LuLu’s Table acknowledges that HUNGER, MALNUTRITION and ISOLATION are fundamental risks to humankind.
We’ve analyzed the best approach way to mitigate hunger. We came up with the concept of mobile distribution of plant-based meals via a food truck and volunteers. We are going to feed people and talk to them. We are dedicated to monitoring core elements of the program including the menu, distribution areas and ways to increase sponsor participation.
Healthy Kids Happy Planet sponsored the first ever legislation calling for daily plant-based vegetarian school lunches, the CA Healthy School Lunch Act, Assembly Concurrent Resolution 16 (ACR 16, 2003). New York, Florida and Hawaii followed suit. As a result, the CA Department of Education Nutrition Services has created comprehensive resources to assist schools in meeting the goals of the Healthy School Lunch Act. Click here to learn more.
